In 2006, I campaigned on a pledge to protect coastal resources, provide transparency in county government affairs and deliver a sense of optimism about the future of our community.
Today – nearly four years later – I am seeking a second term on the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors because I believe I have fulfilled that pledge and, I believe, because there is so much more work to be done. We can never stop trying to protect our coast, defend our way of life and prepare for future generations.
My first term as a county supervisor has been exciting and challenging. It’s been my pleasure to serve the residents of the 2nd District and the entire county. Even as we’ve faced an unprecedented economic downturn, I am pleased that the Board of Supervisors is moving in a forward direction.
Now, I am ready and eager to forge ahead and seek another term.
As I look back over the last three-plus years in office, I’m proud of several accomplishments:
- Growing Intelligently and Protecting Resources
I’ve led the county’s efforts to instill smart growth (anti-sprawl) policies into our General Plan and to coordinate county and city growth policies. I continue to lead efforts to protect our coastal view corridors and precious resources. - Building and Funding the Los Osos Sewer
I’ve led the effort to build a sewer in Los Osos, conducting unprecedented public outreach, lobbying for federal funding, and coordinating with myriad other state agencies. After 30 years of controversy and failure, this effort is on the threshold of success: we are eligible for $80 million of stimulus-backed funding, pending final permit action by the Coastal Commission. - A New Plan and New Libraries
In 2007, I convened the first countywide Library Summit, which resulted in a Library Vision document – a plan for our County’s library system in the 21st century. At the same time, I’ve worked with staff and community members to secure new and larger libraries in Cayucos and Cambria. The Cayucos location will open soon and save the County money on leased space. I’m excited to work with the Cambria community on efforts that should get that branch open in 2011. - Read More on Accomplishments
As I look ahead, there’s much yet to be done:
- We must keep our commitment to do everything we can to protect our communities, neighborhoods, and families. Public safety is my highest priority and we must keep that commitment, even in the face of shrinking resources.
- We will move forward to implement smart growth strategies in order to protect the natural resources that support our treasured agricultural land and scenic open spaces. I will continue the fight to protect our incomparable coastal areas.
- We need to move quickly to increase renewable energy sources and improve energy efficiency through green building and public transit. I believe our own local fight to address global climate change gives us the opportunity for new jobs in a green economy. Here’s an area where this county can lead.
- We need to adapt county government to the new and difficult budget realities. We must carefully and efficiently apply scarce funds to needed infrastructure projects and continue to provide crucial county services. I’ll continue to work with county supervisors from around the state to advocate the reform of state government and to bring resources and authority home to the local level.
My job as County Supervisor is the most interesting and challenging that I’ve ever had. The many issues that have come across my desk in the last three years have provided many opportunities to help County residents and further the noble work of public service. I’m thankful every day for the support of an excellent staff and so many engaged constituents.
